We have had a very busy term in P1a. Our topic this term has been food and farming and The Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET) have supported us throughout.
We started the term with a visit from Daisy the cow, her calf and farmers Andrew and Chrissie. We learnt about how milk and other dairy products are produced and then everyone got the chance to milk Daisy!
'Professor Potato' John Marshall came in to visit the class. He shared his knowledge, passion and experience of working in the potato trade. He taught us all about how potatoes are produced and we looked at some of the different types of potatoes available. John also had a look at our seed potatoes which have been 'chitting' and talked us through the steps we now need to take as part of the RHET potato growing competition!
We have been working on our independent reading and writing this term and have created many story maps as part of our Talk for Writing. In maths we have been focussing on addition, subtraction 2D and 3D shapes.
We all love our weekly trip to the woods. The children have grown in confidence since the start of the year. They love to climb trees, build dens and use their imaginations to make shops and cafes.
We all really enjoyed our session with Mrs Wilson. Mrs Wilson taught us how to safely build a fire and then we had the opportunity to toast our own marshmallow over the open fire! Building a fire comes with an element of risk. Risk management is a key life skill and the children learnt how to take personal responsibility, develop resilience and work as part of a team 🌟
